Virgilio in Festival Costume

Virgilio in Festival Costume

First there was a Police Officer (Neil Perez). Then came a Pedicab Driver (Mario Esquierdo, Jr.). Now, let’s give way to the Farmer from Bukidnon who sells his produce in the oldest and largest public market in Cebu City — Carbon Market. Virgilio Llego holds a BS Hospitality Management degree. He does all-around talents in singing, dancing and acting. And for a guy who loves eating, his body’s practically zero fat level is amusing. In fact, he has one of the best-sculpted torsos in the competition.

bukidnon21 Advocacy-wise, he definitely wants “…to help my co-farmers in my community by making a community project that will help them be self-sufficient and can help their families and our environment as well.”

Virgilio may not be the best-looking of the batch, but methinks his exotic features and appeal could be a stand-out in one of the male pageants to be hosted by either Panama or the Dominican Republic. Don’t you agree, dear reader?

Show your support for Mister Bukidnon by voting for him in the Fan Favorite Poll. ;-)

finalsnight For those still unfeatured candidates of Misters of the Philippines 2014, I am posting this one to familiarize them with you, dear readers. Below is a sextet of contenders who are in the thick of vying for the four titles at stake. They complete the twenty-six males who will take part in the Finals this coming Sunday at UMak Grand Theater.

misterpaombong1 misterpaombong21 Bernard Joseph Sumera of Paombong, Bulacan comes into the competition armed with modeling gigs and some bit roles on TV tucked under his belt.

My advocacy is to spread the word of love to people. If we could love God, we will be able to love everyone and that will make us better individuals. There will be no killings and crime.“, Bernard states.

Some will find his seductive looks disarming. So if you want to cast your vote for this Bulakenyo, click HERE.

misterilocos1 misterilocos21 A cultural dancer who swims for fitness, John Henry Pescador of Ilocos Norte is still working at his Hotel & Restaurant Management degree.

Henry believes that “The best thing about being a Filipino is that we are gifted of undying will. We don’t have the excuses in giving up every time we encounter difficulties in life. Our will and determination make us rise through tragedies in life.

If you want to vote for Mister Ilocos Norte, click HERE.

mistersamar1 mistersamar21 Edviro Fuentes, Jr. of Samar is a Registered Nurse by profession. He completed his studies at Tacloban City’s Remedios Trinidad Romualdez Medical Foundation.

This contender – with a nicely gym-toned body to be proud of – sings and dances, but also enjoys poring his mind over interesting books to beef up his knowledge.

I’m sure this bet from Samar has his share of supporters and followers. So if you want to keep on voting for him to become a Fan Favorite, click HERE.

mistersemirara1 mistersemirara21 So where is Semirara Island exactly? For the uninformed, it is part of a group of islands in Caluya, Antique associated with mining.

Dennis Montero – who was a previous joiner of Mister Philippines – is a tall gym instructor who adheres to the importance of the male pageant as a “a venue to tell the entire Philippines what is in Semirara Island and how it plays a major role in providing electricity to its neighboring provinces.

Vote HERE for Mister Semirara Island.

misterbohol1 misterbohol21 Elcid Camacho dreams of becoming a Licensed Civil Engineer one day. But in the meantime, his mind is focused on doing well in the competition for his province of Bohol.

Elcid wrote in his online bio that “Filipinos are known for being hard-working and talented. That’s why I’m very proud being a Filipino because it takes hard work to develop our talents.

Are you keen in supporting this Boholano? Click HERE.

misterqc1 misterqc21 This Physical Therapist from Quezon City enjoys performing a lot. He also collects Starbucks tumblers as a hobby.

Timothy Justin Ancheta puts his faith in Medical Tourism. “As a health practitioner, my advocacy revolves in alleviating pain and promoting better health for everyone. I am to reach those who are in pain or are with difficulty in their function and help them. I aim to show that good health and a better life is not only for the rich but for everyone who is willing to embrace it.

HERE is where you can vote for Mister Quezon City in the fan poll.

So there. That completes my “getting-to-know-you” posts for Misters of the Philippines 2014. Have you made up your mind on who will make up your list of final picks? I hope so.

My Final Predictions will go live at midnight. ;-)

The 26 Hopefuls in Formal Wear (Photo credit: Lito Caleon for fabmanilaph)

Tomorrow night, four (4) Filipino gentlemen will be selected to represent the country in international male pageants abroad and be, henceforth, called Misters of the Philippines 2014.

While my forecast for the finals looks pretty much cut-and-dry, I actually have reasons in assigning the titles to specific candidates among the twenty-six (26) hopefuls.

My Sparta-cular 4 for Misters of the Philippines 2014 (left to right): Neil Perez, Adam Davies, Alexis Francis Martinez and Nicko dela Cruz

My Sparta-cular 4 for Misters of the Philippines 2014 (left to right): Neil Perez, Adam Davies, Alexis Francis Martinez and Nicko dela Cruz

mistertondoformisterintl

Neil Perez of Tondo, Manila is my choice for Mister International 2014 in Seoul. Aside from an interesting back story that would merit excellent publicity mileage here and in Korea, this Police Officer is actually one of the few most prepared and polished to put his best foot forward side-by-side foreign delegates. And with the competition commencing less than a month from now, our representative should be 100% ready to step up to the plate with only minimal tweakings required.

adam12

In the case of Mister Model International 2014 to be hosted by Punta Cana, Dominican Republic come November, Adam Davies of the Filipino Community in the UK should be a perfect fit. Aside from being one of the most physically well-bodied contender, he also has the innate charm and smarts (and a relatively underplayed seductiveness on stage) that should serve him well in the contest abroad. Personality needs very little modifications and he should be ready to project an extra confident self. But just one note. I hope that something can be done to conceal that crescent-shaped scar on his left upper shoulder so as to complete the unblemished look. November may be too soon, but I’m still positive that it can be remedied.

misterglobal2015alexis

I have always seen Alexis Francis Martinez of Mabalacat, Pampanga as an underdog, but a potential titleholder right from the get-go. He with the constantly ‘smiling’ face (even if a good number of photos show his serious side), endearing personality, good height and body proportions – combinations that make up for winning package overall. And his attractive presence will be a great boost if he represents us in the Land of Smiles for Mr. Global 2015.

nickotourism

Among my four (4) final picks for the titles, it is Nickolo dela Cruz I initially considered as a strong spoiler. But after the Pre-Pageant last Wedensday night, I assigned him to Mr. Tourism International 2015 in Panama. With sharper styling and presentation guidance from the organizers and well-meaninged handlers, he could turn out to be one fine competitor. The nice physique is already in place so he won’t need to be a slave to gym training if he chooses to stick to his usual fitness routine. I can see a lot of upsides in this guy if he undergoes intensive grooming and polishing.

spoils1 Now, from among the four (4) spoilers, Ichin Daclan looks to be ready to go for the kill if the opportunity presents itself in the final segments of competition. This Sarangani rep has a lot going in his bid. But since I see him more of a Mister International bet, I placed him as a mister-in-waiting to Neil Perez. I just want him showing a joyful facade more often than not, and not a model’s poker face. The trio of remaining contenders here – Judah Cohen of Fil-USA, Allain de Ocampo of Bocaue and Joseph Doruelo of Caloocan City – are like dark horses for victory.

Bernard Sumera is 15th on my list.

Bernard Sumera is 15th on my list.

If I may just add a couple more, Elvin Tiel of Aklan and John Israel San Luis of Sta. Maria are also gearing for solid finishes if they do not lose the momentum going into the more crucial stages of judging.

And if only a Top 15 will be called instead, I would whole-heartedly give the last spot to Bernard Joseph Sumera of Paombong, Bulacan.

Whatever the results will reveal, I sincerely hope that it won’t significantly differ from my personal assessment. Surprises are welcome, but not in excess.

Sashes for the finals

Tonight, there will only be four (4) winners – well, five if the organizers decide to give a Manhunt Philippines 2014 title – during the finals of Misters of the Philippines at the University of Makati Grand Theatre. No runners-up to be named, for now.

So will the two (2) heavy favorites – Neil Perez of Tondo, Manila and Adam Davies from the Filipino Community in the UK – zoom all the way to the top spots? My sources told me that both guys did pretty well in their respective closed-door interviews held yesterday.

Will Ichin spoil one of top faves?

Will Ichin spoil one of top faves?

But how about the likes of Mister Sarangani Ichin Daclan who has also shown a lot of promise during the entirety of pre-pageant activities. Is he capable of pulling the rug from underneath one of the two guys above?

We’ll have to wait and see as the competition of Misters of the Philippines 2014 comes to a close later in the evening.

For now, watch the video coverage of preliminary events made by Mabuhay Montreal TV.

image Last Sunday night during the finals of Misters of the Philippines 2014, Mister Tondo, Manila Neil Perez was such a crowd-pleaser that he elicited the loudest cheers and applause (aside from having the biggest group of supporters) everytime he appeared onstage. And when he started winning special awards left and right (Best in Swimwear, Mister Photogenic, Fitness Challenge Fast-Track plus a string of sponsor awards), there was no question in most everyone’s mind on who will end up as the big winner. The only guess left to be speculated upon was what exact time he will take his spot as Mister International Philippines 2014. It came right about the stroke of midnight.

From hereon now, the Police Officer – a Criminology graduate whose parents finished the same course in college – will be more than just the unofficial poster boy of the PNP (Philippine National Police). He is officially a representative of the country to Mister International 2014 which will take place in Seoul, Korea starting next month.

Among the four titleholders who were announced as Misters of the Philippines 2014 last Sunday night, it was Joseph Doruelo who gave the most eyes-wide-shut glorious sigh of relief after hearing his name being called winner of Mr. Global Philippines 2014.

And you can’t fault the guy for reacting emotionally. He wanted so much to win a title. Not that getting Best in Talent was enough of a consolation. The prospects of representing the Philippines in an international male competition have made his eyes twinkle in excitement long before the final judging. Read in full his responses to the questions posed by the organizers:

Why did you join Misters of the Philippines?

I decided to join this pageant for the prestige, power and money. Prestige because there is a possibility that I can be famous and popular influencing the lives of others in a positive way. Power because I want to have the connections with respected and influential personalities so that with them I can help in transforming our society into a more progressive and God-fearing one. Finally, I joined for the money so that it could adequately support all my projects and plans— for my family and for the community where I belong.

What is the importance of pageants like Misters of the Philippines in our country today?

The importance of this pageant in our country today is that it gives Popularity and Investments. By popularity, it helps to promote our country to the world because this showcases our culture, festivities, beautiful destination spots (like the underground river in Palawan), classic delicacies and products. With this carries the hope that other countries will invest in our in the Philippines whether through business or tourism, and it will help our government and our society to be more progressive.

What is your advocacy? Tell us something about it.

My Advocacies are anti-Corruption, Employment and Health. We should stop corruption so that the funds of our government can be fairly allocated. This will benefit those who need it most. Our country can now serve as an establishment that offers jobs and quality education for a better employment and progress. Lastly, I would support health programs that conduct awareness and affordable medicines in the community. We should start every single day of our lives with conscience, dignity, knowledge, love, and kindness. If we people work together with these qualities I guess we are preparing for a better country into a better world.

What is the best thing about being a Filipino?

The best thing about being a Filipino is that we are generous, hospitable, dedicated and strong. This is why people in the world love us. Our characteristics sails us through the good times and in bad times.

What is your ambition in life?

To be a Doctor, and I don’t want to stop learning and as a Registered Nurse. I want to be more knowledgeable and I want to strive to learn more about my chosen field of expertise. Just like the lyrics said in a song “Don’t stop believing!”

Take it easy for now, Joseph. You still have six months before going to Bangkok, Thailand for Mr. Global 2015. Enjoy the fame, but don’t let it go to your head. So that by the time you’ll represent the country, you will focus on bringing pride and honor to the country. :-D

Misters of the Philippines - Model International 2014 Adam Davies (Photo credit: OPMBworldwide)

During the opening segment (Photo credit: OPMBworldwide)

Mister Filipino Community of the United Kingdom Adam Davies is the guy everyone thought would give Neil Perez a good run for the money. And during the Q&A and advocacy speech, he almost certainly did.

All throughout the finals, he was able to pull in a decent-sized crowd of cheerers, but nothing that would compare to the bigger number of the top favorite. At any rate, he still wowed everyone with his great body and glowing stage presence on the way to bagging the right to represent the country in Mister Model International 2014 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic this coming November.

Perhaps, it was Adam’s final answer – where he stated that winning comes only second to the great experience of joining and meeting new friends – that convinced the judges of giving him a title, but not the highest honor. But then again, a little birdie also whispered to my ear that the organizers of the international competition in the Caribbean must have handpicked him to be the Philippine rep. Regardless, he is now a winning Mister. And proudly so.

image

Adam during the swimwear competition (Photo credit: OPMBworldwide)

Why did you join Misters of the Philippines?

As Misters of the Philippines is one of the biggest male pageants in out country it is an opportunity I can’t turn away as it opens a lot of doors and pathways for its contestants. I also see it as a form of personality development and look forward to learning and gaining experiences throughout the competition I also fondly anticipate meeting fellow contestants as it is a chance to socialize with similar interests and of similar age to me, as i only get to see my loving family when visiting the Philippines. I was also surprised to see the popularity of pageantry, even male pageants, within the Philippines as it’s something you don’t see in my culture back home in England, so for me it’s a way to educate and explore other aspects of the Filipino culture and to get in touch with my Filipino roots

What is the importance of pageants like Misters of the Philippines?

For Misters of the Philippines in particular, it showcases the talents, beauty and what Philippines has to offer on a global scale because we have the opportunity to represent Philippines in International pageants across the world. It can also lead to potential career opportunities for its competitors as it has a large following from people in the entertainment and modelling industries. But most importantly I think it has an impact within society because pageantry is so heavily followed by the media so the people involved are put on a pedestal which gives us responsibility to act as role models especially to youngsters to give them belief that through hard work and focus they can succeed in whatever career or passions they choose.

image

Adam during the Formal Wear competition (Photo credit: OPMBworldwide)

What is your advocacy?

Where I live and grew up, poverty and homelessness isn’t a big problem, at least nowhere near on the same scale as in the Philippines. Thus it was quite a culture shock when I came to Philippines for the first time. I saw barefooted women and children, carrying babies and begging car to car in the middle of the heat. It saddens me that each time I return the problem still remains with little improvements being made on the matter of poverty. Although it’s fantastic to see rapid economic growth within the Philippine economy over the past decade, especially as a Business & Finance student, it’s disturbing to see people living in poverty in slums within a stones throw of sky scrapers in most cities and business districts. So primarily I want to focus on helping towards the ongoing battle of eradicating poverty in Philippines by working alongside established charities in whatever way possible and I’m especially interested in being able to do some volunteering. Hopefully from this competition and possibility of future work I could become an ambassador for one of these charities if I become some sort of public figure.

What is the best thing about being Filipino?

There are many things that make me proud to be Filipino as they are some of the most hospitable, generous and caring people in the world. But I think the best thing which makes us one of the most inspirational nations in the world is that no matter what peoples circumstances they always seem to keep there spirits high and are always smiling and looking happy because we make the most out of things we have rather than dwell on the things we don’t have. Filipinos are living proof of the saying ‘money doesn’t buy happiness’. That’s why I’m proud to say I come from the most beautiful place in the world, not just because of its breathtaking landscapes but because of its beautiful people, inside and out.

What is your ambition in life?

Like most people I want to have a successful job, provide for my family, inspire people etc. but I’m still relatively young so I’m still learning from my experiences and finding out what my purpose/ aims in life are. However the one thing I’m most looking forward to is the day I become a father and I want to try and be the best dad I can be, when the time is right.. (Don’t take that the wrong way though, I’m definitely not looking to settle down any time soon.

image

Adam during the final Q&A (Photo credit: OPMBworldwide)

Our Fil-Brit hunk doesn’t need to wait too long for his debut on the international pageant stage. In fact, he only has barely two months to prepare for Mister Model International. But given his current momentum after winning the national pennant, he should be up in spirit to give an excellent fight for the Philippines in Punta Cana.

Best of luck, Adam! ;-)

Prior to the finals, a lot of pageant watchers dismissed Judah Cohen’s chances of winning Mister of the Philippines 2014. Here is a guy who – while tall and good-looking – doesn’t really project the body and nuances of a title-grabber.

But you’ve got to hand it to this rep from the Filipino Community of the USA. He knows that his  communication skills in oral and penned formats cannot be belittled, let alone ignored. He only needed to make it to the Top 15 to give a well-delivered advocacy speech that helped his bid to make the Top 9. From there, he negotiated the final Q&A with the ease and fluency of a good communicator, however his answer came out a wee bit too long.

During the swimwear competition (Photo credit: OPMBworldwide)

So what about his lanky frame that direly needs beefing up for the Mr. Tourism International 2015 competition in Panama City? Well, time is on his side. The pageant mission won’t be until May next year, so he’d better plot a good gym training program with a strict fitness trainer who can whip him to shape without any backslides in the process.

In his brief and concise online bio, Judah stated the following:

Why did you join Misters of the Philippines?
I joined Misters of the Philippines to expand my horizons. The world is full of knowledge, it’s up to you how you attain it. I prefer to go out, travel, and grab at what life has to teach.

During formal wear (Photo credit: OPMBworldwide)

During formal wear (Photo credit: OPMBworldwide)

What is the importance of pageants like Misters of the Philippines in our country today?
Pageants are all about confidence in ones self, from the way one portrays his or herself physically, to the way they speak. Pageants help us develop those traits, which people use everyday, whether consciously or unconsciously.

What is your advocacy? Tell us something about it.
Be good for the sake of being good, not for any reward.

What is the best thing about being a Filipino?
The best thing about being Filipino is our inherent desire to make people feel comfortable. I believe we are one of the most hospitable people in the world.

What is your ambition in life?
My ambition in life is to be a proper provider for my family and family to be. In order to do so, I aim to develop a career as a CFA, or Chartered Financial Analyst.

Good luck, Mister! ;-)

The Press Release from the organizers:
THE 2014 MISTER INTERNATIONAL PAGEANT TO BE POSTPONED TO NOVEMBER 29

The Mister Singapore Organization regrets to announce that the 2014 MISTER INTERNATIONAL Pageant has been postponed to November 29.

Jung-Hoon Jun, Chairman of the 2014 Mister International Host Committee Korea, had just informed us that three of the four key personnel of the committee were involved in a traffic accident on their way home last night and had sustained serious injuries. Jung-Hoon is not confident to conduct the pageant single handedly. After much discussion this afternoon, we have decided to postpone the pageant until a new committee has been formed or at least two of the personnel are well enough to work.

We sincerely seek your kind understanding and apologize for any inconvenience caused as this situation is totally unexpected and beyond our control.

6’2″ cutie Alvin Arranguez – Top 9 and Mister City of Cebu during Misters of the Philippines 2014 – has been selected as Mr. Diversity Culture Philippines and will represent the country in the upcoming international finals scheduled to happen in both Bohol and Manila from November 26 – December 5.

The tall and sporty Cebuano must have impressed the local organizers of Diversity Culture enough to have him wear the Philippine sash for Mr. & Miss Diversity Culture International. He will now have his hands full preparing for the said event.

Good luck to you, Alvin! :-D

Judah Cohen is bulking up nicely for Mister Tourism International 2015 in Panama

image

Be prepared for Judah's transformation

The fourth and last Misters of the Philippines 2014 titleholder is busy preparing for his competition with a lot of hard work and discipline. And Mister Tourism International Philippines 2014 Judah Cohen has promised to transform into a fiercer version of himself just in time for the Mister Tourism International 2015 World Finals in Panama from May 24 to June 1.

Truth be told, I had concerns last year that his lanky body frame will go unnoticed once he goes abroad for his mission. But lo and behold, his pictures in this post should disprove my initial reservations. The guy is bulking up nicely. And he should be more than ready to fight in just a couple of months.

He has the good height alright. He speaks well, and has never looked better, in my opinion.

Keep it up, Judah! :-)

Cebu-based Photographer Artem Levy

Artem Levy (left photo) is slowly becoming one of my favorite photographers. The Cebu-based Russian lensman may have built a following in the Queen City of the South with his wedding pictorials, but he is equally good in doing photoshoots for models. Check out one of his latest works in this post where Sasha Tajaran (a runner-up during Miss Tourism World Philippines 2014) and Virgilio ‘Verge’ Llego (a candidate during Misters of the Philippines 2014) were shot in their sizzling best aboard a yacht.

image During Misters 2014, the organizers assembled a set of winners you’d never thought would blend well at the onset. There is the UK-bred Adam Davies who had a hard time adjusting to the climate and the food. There is the wide-eyed and enthusiastic Joseph Doruelo who had so many dreams running inside his head. There is the Cebuano Fil-Am Judah Cohen whose work background made it at times difficult for him to join in the flow of things in the male pageant world. And there is the more relatively easy-going Nicko Cruz who also wanted to shine on his own inspite of being tagged as “mere” 1st Runner-Up by some intrigue-loving online posters. Thankfully, the presence of a big brother in Neil Perez helped pull things together. He is like a glue who adjusts his adhesiveness depending on the quirks/peculiar moods of each one.

Do watch their victory moments during last year’s finals of Misters.

Jose Paredes (back to the camera) is now part of the family as well

Almost a year later, the group has become more like a band of brothers. Adam may not be present all the time given his commitments back home, but promises to be home for Misters of Pilipinas 2015 and complete a much-awaited reunion. Neil, Joseph and Nicko are solid as a rock. And Judah has always made his own sincere efforts to be an integral part of the family.

It does help a lot that the organizers run the whole thing like a big household where the division of labor is defined, and responsibilities are handled with commitment. During their recent concerts in Samar, the boys showed how much they have gotten close to each other. And with the worthy addition of Mister International 2013 Jose Anmer Paredes who now feels more Filipino than Venezuelan (figuratively, of course), the group has grown in number and, most certainly, in character. ;-)
